Government's announcement of TGA Blueprint
The Australian Government has today failed both consumers and the therapeutic products industries by refusing to act to support better regulation of the interactions between the industries and healthcare professionals and consumers. This comes despite identifying the need to act in its own position paper and against recommendations of a working group established for the purpose.

December Pulseline newsletter out now!
The December issue of Pulseline is now available. This month’s Pulseline includes a reflection on the past year including work underway in the implementation of the HTA review, regulatory reforms, the value of technology project and telehealth. Building an Australian medtech industry and developing skills and capability in the industry were also a focus for 2011.

Action proposed on manufacturing industry
The NSW Government recognises the potential of the medical technology sector as a high performing growth industry and prioritises the sub sector of medical devices as a key focus of its NSW Manufacturing Industry Action Plan. The medical technology industry is one of the few manufacturing industries with the potential to deliver economic growth in NSW. MTAA believes the NSW Government can provide a framework to support industry development by establishing clear goals and priorities to form part of a growth strategy for the industry.

Senate Inquiry findings
MTAA has welcomed the release of the report from the Australian Senate’s Inquiry into the regulatory standards for the approval of medical devices. MTAA believes that reforms to the regulation of medical devices in Australia, and the requirements for assessment prior to market entry, must be consistent with requirements in other major economies.

Health and medical research review
MTAA has contributed further to the Strategic Review of Health and Medical Research in NSW by responding to the range of issues which have been raised in the Discussion Paper. While the Discussion Paper addresses some of the comments made by MTAA in previous submissions to the Review, MTAA believes that some recommendations could go further to truly drive the development of NSW as the national leader in the medical technology sector.
