Reform needed to address patient access to diagnostic tests
The Medical Technology Association of Australia (MTAA) is calling on the Federal Government to engage in discussion on reforming access to pathology and diagnostic imaging services after Tuesday's Budget announcements.
"In the Budget measures announced for changes to the Medicare Benefits Schedule, the Government has only reshuffled the funding for pathology and diagnostic imaging services, not reformed access to technologies which deliver better patient outcomes," said Anne Trimmer, MTAA CEO.
"Preventative health screening is still only reimbursed in few cases for example PAP smears and mammography."
A key challenge for the health system is the urgent need to reform the business model in pathology services in Australia away from the "production-centric" pathology service providers towards a "patient centric" diagnostic service.
A good example of this is Point of Care testing in the GP surgery which means patients can get results immediately. It is especially relevant in chronic disease management in a highly dispersed population yet this new technology is still not funded in Australia.
"A fresh approach to assessment and funding of in vitro diagnostic technologies and services is long overdue," said Anne Trimmer, MTAA CEO.
The medical technology industry expects to play a vital role in the consideration of structural reform, quality improvement initiatives and possible long term funding that maintains patient access and affordability.
