Review of advertising arrangements for therapeutic goods

The Therapeutic Goods Administration has released a consultation paper on the advertising of therapeutic goods. This is one of the last areas of regulatory reform left untouched since the demise of the proposed Australia New Zealand Therapeutic Products Authority (ANZTPA). It is also an area in need of modernisation, both to ensure appropriate advertising treatment using newer media (including social media), and to achieve consistency with more traditional media. The processes for handling complaints need to be streamlined. The medical technology sector would also like to see changes to advertising regulation which will enable provision of consumer information about products in a similar manner to the provision of consumer information on medicines.

The medical technology industry contributed a significant effort to the development of reforms proposed for ANZTPA which will inform MTAA’s response to the current consultation. TGA is accepting submissions until 27 August 2010.
