The Minister for Health and Ageing, Nicola Roxon, and the federal opposition health spokesperson, Peter Dutton, have both been invited to open the conference on 15 September.

We have put together a wonderful program of speakers including heart surgeon and Chairman of Narayana Hrudayalaya in Bangalore, India’s leading cardiac care hospital, Dr Devi Prasad Shetty. Once cardiac surgeon to Mother Teresa, he and his team have performed 17,000 heart operations, treating patients from 73 countries. Clinically trained in the UK, Dr Shetty is working to address India’s huge heart surgery needs, estimated to be 2.5m cases annually. He uses innovation such as telemedicine to help some of the poorest patients, who otherwise would not have access to affordable healthcare.

We are very happy to announce international keynote speaker Dr Tom Fogarty. He is Professor of Surgery at Stanford University, Founder, Fogarty Institute for Innovation and inventor of medical devices, most famously of the Fogarty Embolectomy Balloon Catheter. Over the past 40 years he has acquired more than 100 surgical patents. In 2001, he was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame, joining the ranks of the Edisons and the Wright brothers of the world.

Due to popular demand, Bernard Salt is back as keynote speaker for the conference. Bernard doesn't need an introduction and has been very well received at previous conferences. He will comment on the effects of an aging population on the Australian healthcare setting.

Don't forget to register for the conference dinner and Kerrin Rennie Award ceremony. At this year's dinner we will celebrate MTAA’s 30 year anniversary and the history of medical technology in Australia.

The workshop program on day two of the conference includes topics of interest to the medical technology industry. Make sure you are there when industry issues are discussed.

We look forward to welcoming you to the conference at Star City in September.
