Submission to the Productivity Commission on their Issues Paper Disability Care and Support
MTAA responded in a submission to the Productivity Commission on the Issues Paper: Disability Care and Support, released in May 2010. The Australian Government has asked the Commission to consider how a national disability scheme could be designed, administered, financed and implemented.
MTAA would like to see policy developed to enable Australians with disabilities to have better access to medical products and technologies that assist independent living, decrease inappropriate emergency room, hospital and residential care admissions, and enable them to remain in their own homes.
There are a large number of sub-acute medical products and remote monitoring devices that can assist individuals with disabilities to stay in their homes. Access to services that assist independent living needs to be increased through appropriate funding mechanisms. The ability to monitor medical conditions remotely increases access to care for people in rural and remote areas.
Advanced medical technologies can be used to remotely monitor and maintain health, however healthcare professionals are not currently reimbursed to take advantage of them.
