Program and speakers
Dr Devi Prasad Shetty is a heart surgeon and Chairman of Narayana Hrudayalaya in Bangalore, India’s leading cardiac care hospital. Once cardiac surgeon to Mother Teresa, he and his team have performed 17,000 heart operations, treating patients from 73 countries. Clinically trained in the UK, Dr Shetty is working to address India’s huge heart surgery needs, estimated to be 2.5m cases annually, through applying the principles of economies of scale. He uses innovation such as telemedicine to help some of the poorest patients who otherwise would not have access to affordable healthcare.
We have invited the Minister for Health and Ageing, Nicola Roxon, and the federal opposition health spokesperson, Peter Dutton, to open the conference on 15 September.
Due to popular demand, Bernard Salt is back as keynote speaker for the conference. Bernard doesn't need an introduction and has been very well received at previous conferences. He will comment on the effects of an aging population on the Australian healthcare setting.
We are very happy to announce international keynote speaker Professor Tom Fogarty. He is Professor of Surgery at Stanford University, inventor of medical devices most famously of the Fogarty Embolectomy Balloon Catheter. Over the past 40 years he has acquired more than 100 surgical patents. In 2001, he was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame, joining the ranks of the Edisons and the Wright brothers of the world.
Other speakers and sessions include:
- Rohan Hammett, National Manager TGA
- Anne Trimmer, CEO MTAA
- Panel discussion on the development of medical technology.
On day two of the conference, the workshop program includes sessions on:
- The implementation of the Health Technology Assessment report recommendations
- Device registries and post market surveillance
- State procurement updates from NSW and SA
- Challenges of commercialising medical technologies
- Clinical investigations for the medical technology sector
- Using new media to communicate health messages
- The value of coaching and mentoring future leaders
