Early Federal Election in 2018?

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull may be forced to call an election after just two years of the Coalition's current three-year term, political hardheads believe. Jody Fassina (Insight Strategy), has flagged the likelihood and laid out the packed electoral schedule as the main reason. The most realistic window for the Turnbull government to hold the election is August or September 2018. Stakeholders must begin factoring this reality in to their public affairs and business strategies.

Changes to Skilled Migration

On 18 April 2017, the Government announced the Temporary Work (Skilled) visa (subclass 457 visa) will be abolished and replaced with the completely new Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) visa in March 2018.  The TSS visa programme will be comprised of a Short-Term stream of up to two years and a Medium-Term stream of up to four years.

Australia must have a positive and robust skilled migration program, but the politicisation of the migration program has been disappointing. This has resulted in changes to temporary migration beyond the fine-tuning that could have been constructively negotiated with industry.

MTAA member companies employ thousands of Australian workers and we strongly support a skilled visa system that compliments the Australian workforce and adds additional skills, capacity and attractiveness to invest in the Australian industry.

MTAA is concerned the current changes will negatively impact Australia as a innovation destination for skilled MedTech workers and researchers. MTAA is actively working with Government and stakeholders to see if we can find a solution to this problem.
