BioMedTech Horizon program funds first in human trials to restore sight

The Government announced today the first 11 recipients from the $35 million BioMedTech Horizons program.

The program aims to support the development of new and innovative technologies by Australian medical technology (MedTech) companies.

Kerrin Rennie Award 2017 Call for Nominations

MTAA invites the Australian medical technology industry to participate in the 2017 Kerrin Rennie Award for Excellence in Medical Technology – Improving Quality of Life. Any medical technology company based in or represented in Australia may enter a product launched in Australia between 1 January 2015 and 25 August 2017 and used in the diagnosis, prevention or treatment of disease or disability or improvement of quality of life. Entry is not limited to members of MTAA.

3D Printing of implantable medical devices

On August 10th 2017, the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) held a workshop titled Regulatory considerations for additive manufacturing (3D printing) in the medical field.

3D printing is already used in large volume production of devices to a standard design as an alternative to traditional subtractive manufacturing, but this technology is becoming increasingly popular in medicine as a way to overcome patient-specific challenges, in particular in the area of cranial and facial reconstruction and orthopaedic implants.

Catheter Ablation Saves Life: Time to Act

The Medical Technology Association of Australia (MTAA) welcomed the findings published in The New England Journal of Medicine, that patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) benefited more from catheter ablation over drug treatment.
