Women in MedTech

The Importance of the Women in MedTech Initiative

The Women in MedTech (WiMT) initiative was launched in 2015 by the Medical Technology Association of Australia (MTAA) Board to address a critical need: fostering gender diversity and inclusion within MedTech. Recognising that diverse leadership drives innovation and business success, the MTAA Board established the WiMT Committee to champion this cause, ensuring that the sector benefits from the full potential of women in leadership, research, and operational roles.

Why WiMT Matter?

1. Advancing Gender Diversity in MedTech

  • The MedTech industry, like many STEM fields, has historically faced gender imbalances, particularly in leadership. WiMT was created to lead the conversation on why diversity matters—not just for equality, but for better business outcomes, innovation, and patient-centric solutions.
  • By setting benchmarks and promoting best practices, WiMT helps companies attract, retain, and advance female talent.

2. Empowering Women to Reach Their Full Potential

  • WiMT’s mission goes beyond advocacy—it actively supports career growth through mentorship, leadership programs, and networking opportunities.
  • Initiatives like the Leadership Elevation Series equip women with the skills and confidence to break barriers and ascend to senior roles.

3. Strengthen MedTech

  • Diverse teams drive better decision-making and innovation—essential in an industry focused on improving healthcare.
  • WiMT’s work ensures that Industry reflects the diversity of the patients it serves, leading to more inclusive medical technologies.

A Commitment to Lasting Change

Since its inception, WiMT has been a catalyst for progress, from influencing corporate policies to celebrating female leaders through awards and recognition. By fostering an environment where women thrive, lead, and innovate, WiMT is not just shaping careers—it is shaping the future of MedTech in Australia and beyond.
