Medical Device Industry Response to Premium Increases

Today the Minister for Health, The Hon Greg Hunt MP, announced the approval of private health insurance (PHI) companies increasing premiums that will take affect from 1 April 2017.

With today’s announcement the PHI industry on average has increased premiums by 50.83% since 2009 but continues to blame the medical device industry for premium pressures.

Private Health Premiums to Rise Another $200 in 2018

The Medical Technology Association of Australia (MTAA) has singlehandedly delivered through its Agreement with the Commonwealth the lowest premium increase in 17 years. The Agreement signed in October 2017 will save private health insurers $1.1 billion in payments for medical devices over the next four years.  However, these cuts are significant and will impact on jobs and investment in the medical technology industry.

Private health insurance simpler and cheaper for everyday Australians

Minister for Health, Greg Hunt announced today the Rules which give effect to the new private health insurance product categorisation that will start from 1 April, 2019. MTAA and a number of other stakeholders have expressed concerns these changes will have on consumers access to a range of treatments and the unintended consequences of people dropping out of private health insurance and onto the public waiting list.
