Expenditure

For major obesity procedures, public funding is provided through Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) rebates. MBS expenditure by item is shown in Table 5, with growth rates in the MBS items averaging well over 30% per annum. In current dollar terms, expenditure has increased from $1.6 million in 2000-01 on the six items to $19.6 million in 2009-10 (Figure 4).
