Mentoring

Mentoring

Mentoring programs encourage and support organisational talent and improve retention. A mentoring relationship is usually characterised by an experienced person assisting another person to grow and learn. Experience, skills and a genuine desire to develop people are valuable assets in a mentoring relationship. Open and assertive communication and the trust of both parties are essential.

Emerging Leaders Development Program

In 2011, MTAA partnered with McCarthy Mentoring to offer a new mentoring program called Emerging Leaders Development Program. This initiative aims to connect MTAA member company high potential aspiring leaders within the medical technology industry with the expertise, insights and networks of leaders from business, government and non-for-profit sectors.

Successes of the program so far...
Eva Hjelm was registered by her company, ArthroCare for the program. Eva joined the industry in 1998 and has seen many changes across the industry particularly in the areas of regulatory, reimbursement, sales and patient involvement. In 2008, Eva arrived in Australia from Sweden as Commercial Director heading up the Australasian arm for ArthroCare. Since her leadership, the Sydney based business has shifted from 10 staff in 2008 to 25 staff in 2012.

Eva’s mentor over the 12 month program has provided a professional sounding board with no vested interest in the medical technology industry. The matching process conducted by McCarthy Mentoring was robust, providing an excellent mentor/mentee match. Eva’s focus was the area of human resources, her self-identified area of need.

As Commercial Director for Australasia, the MTAA mentoring program has been a wonderful opportunity for me to improve the way human resources are managed at ArthroCare across the region. This function is key to good business operations and management.

Recruiting the right staff, organisational structure, performance management, verification of strategic directions and communications, and analysing targeted support structures such as professional development programs that meet the needs of staff have all been outcomes achieved through the Emerging Leaders Development Program.

My mentor was highly experienced in human resources and provided me with outstanding support in an area of limited expertise. I am now considering registering other ArthroCare staff for the program to support their own professional development needs as emerging leaders.”

Their clients include major public corporations, not-for-profits, statutory authorities and individuals who engage them privately. McCarthy Mentoring programs create formal one-to-one relationships between mentors and mentees. These are designed to enhance the mentees skills, knowledge and confidence, to clarify professional and personal goals, and expand professional networks. Mentors provide support and advice to mentees enabling them to develop strategies and apply their learning to the workplace.
