The Medical Technology Association of Australia (MTAA) today thanked The Hon. Greg Hunt, Minister for Health and Ageing, for his leadership over the past five years and his long-standing commitment to the medical devices industry following his valedictory speech in Parliament.

The MTAA is the national association representing companies in the medical technology industry.

“MTAA acknowledges Mr Hunt’s commitment to working collaboratively with the medical devices industry over his tenure as Minister for Health to ensure that Australians have access to world class medical technologies,” Ian Burgess, MTAA CEO, said today.

“MTAA worked closely with the Minister to develop the 2017 agreement with the Federal Government on reforms to medical device pricing in the private health sector which so far have delivered an estimated $826m in savings to private health care.”

“The Minister was a strong and passionate advocate for Australian patients and worked tirelessly with the MedTech sector to find solutions which delivered the best possible value to patients while also supporting ongoing innovation in Australia’s MedTech sector.”

“We acknowledge the progress he has made in working with the sector on further reforms to prostheses pricing which have set a solid foundation for a sustainable funding mechanism to support private patients’ access to innovative technologies in the future,” Mr Burgess said.

MTAA also recognised the Mr Hunt’s achievement in steering Australia through the 2020/21 COVID-19 pandemic.

“Australia’s response to the pandemic has been one of the best in the world and Mr Hunt has played a crucial role in this success by ensuring that public health measures have been informed by expert medical and scientific advice,” MTAA Chair, Maurice Ben-Mayor said today.

“MTAA and our member companies worked closely with the Federal Government through the COVID-19 Industry Working Group to support the Federal Government’s Taskforce and assist in securing essential supplies of ventilators, test kits, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and other ICU supplies required by the healthcare system to move swiftly to manage the pandemic effectively.”

“The leadership shown by the Minister throughout this challenging period has been crucial in bringing together government, health stakeholders and industry to work together to combat this devastating health threat.”

“On behalf of the MTAA I would like to thank Mr Hunt for his services to the Australian people in his role as a federal parliamentarian and wish him all the best for his future endeavours,” Mr Ben-Mayor said.
