PL Data Collection

Members would have received in recent days communique from the Department of Health and MTAA CEO Ian Burgess detailing the request for the collection of public price data for the FY 2022-23 for Part A items on the Prescribed List of Medical Devices and Human Tissue Products (previously Prostheses List).

These two communications were followed by an email from KPMG on Tuesday, 5 September 2023.

KPMG has been engaged by MTAA to assist with the independent collation of public price data, and its transfer to the Independent Health and Aged Care Pricing Authority (IHACPA). The provision for data collection is a requirement of the 2022 MoU between MTAA and the Australian Government.

Sponsor-supplied data is treated as a primary source by IHACPA to calculate the benchmark price for (PL-listed) medical devices in Australian public hospitals, which in turn is used to determine PL benefit adjustments under the PL Reform program. It is critical that members who have products listed on the PL provide this data. In the event that it is absent or incomplete, IHACPA will use other less reliable and less accurate methods for this purpose.

By engaging KPMG to collect the data, MTAA's purpose is to be able to (re)check IHACPA analysis, inform evaluations of PL reforms, and defend against criticisms by insurers.

For further information about submitting the data, please watch this video recording of a brief webinar held on Friday, 8 September 2023. If you have any questions, please contact Paul Dale at pdale@mtaa.org.au or Omar Ali Khan at okhan@mtaa.org.au.
